The Western Union® Company, a global leader in money transfer services, today presented $5,000 worth of education grants to 10 migrant workers in Brunei to cover one year’s tuition costs for their school-going children, back home. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the High Commission of India, the Embassy of the Philippines, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr Ti Eng Hui, Deputy General Manager of Retail Banking and Branch Network for Baiduri Bank and Mr Cedric Dias, Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei of Western Union Financial Services.
The Western Union Education Grant campaign was launched on 07 May and ended on 07 June 2007 for Western Union Gold Cardholders. This is the first time a campaign of its kind has been brought to Brunei Darussalam by Western Union. Western Union Gold Cardholders were required to fill in a form and submit relevant details such as number of children in their home country, monthly income, contact details and more importantly, why they needed the grant. After the first round selection process, 20 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed by Baiduri Bank representatives.
After going through a final selection process, 10 deserving recipients were awarded with the Western Union Education Grant worth BND500 each which will help finance their children’s education in their respective home countries. The education grants were presented to the recipients by Mr Cedric Dias, Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei of Western Union Financial Services.
Mr. Cedric Dias said, “The Western Union Education Grant Program this year is built on the success of the pilot program in 2006 in Singapore.
“From our day-to-day interactions with migrant workers, we learnt that many are worried about sustaining their children’s education because of low income. Many female workers are either widows or the sole breadwinner with husbands back home unable to find jobs. In some cases, the livelihood of their siblings’ families is also dependent on them. Our Education Grant Program is designed to help their children stay in school,” he added.
