Baiduri Bank recently contributed BND20,290 towards the Special Olympics Asia-Pacific Bocce Competition 2005, to be held from 12-14 August 2005 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

The contribution was presented by Mr Philippe Petitier, Senior Deputy General Manager of Baiduri Bank, to HRH Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah at the closing ceremony of the Torch Run held at Taman Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien on Sunday night, 31 July 2005. The contribution will provide meals for the athletes and working committee throughout the event, as well as medals for the winners.

The Special Olympics Asia-Pacific Bocce Competition is a major sporting event organised by the Special Olympics Committee with Pusat Ehsan and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. More than 150 special athletes from Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei are expected to participate in the inaugural event, to be hosted for the first time in Brunei.

The Special Olympics programme offers sports training and athletic competition for individuals who are intellectually challenged. In particular, the programme is designed to help students with intellectual disabilities realise their potential and develop their personal, physical and social skills in order to lead a healthy and productive life within the community.

The charitable contribution is in addition to other initiatives that Baiduri Bank has taken in support of individuals with special needs. Baiduri Bank has been an active sponsor of education programmes, projects and events organised by welfare bodies such as Pusat Ehsan, Child Development Centre and Society for the Management of Autism-Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei. Its annual fundraising event, the Baiduri Bank Charity Golf Tournament, also provides an avenue for golf enthusiasts and members of the public to contribute towards local charitable organisations.

Baiduri Bank will continue its efforts towards fulfilling its corporate social responsibility, working closely with the Government and local non-profit organisations to create a strong and positive impact on community development.
