BAIDURI BANK GROUP RESPONDS TO PLIGHT OF TSUNAMI VICTIMS IN INDONESIA
03 January 2005

In response to the recent earthquake and tsunamis that devastated the coastal areas of Asia, Baiduri Bank Group today (03 January 2005) announced a donation of B$100,000 to help the victims in Indonesia.

The amount is donated to UNICEF and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in aid of the agencies’ relief efforts in Indonesia, the country worst hit by the disaster.

Simon Missiri, Head of Asia Pacific for the Geneva-based International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies – whose membership comprises 181 national Red Cross or Red Crescent societies around the world, including the Brunei Red Crescent – thanked Baiduri Bank Group for its donation to support response activities in Indonesia.

He added, “The devastation in the affected areas of Indonesia is massive and our emergency operation, followed by the recovery and rehabilitation will take years. Every dollar is needed to help the afflicted population. Indonesian Red Cross staff and volunteers are carrying out brave and outstanding work in most difficult and tragic circumstances, buoyed by the goodwill and support from all sectors of the global community.

” Richard Bridle, an official of UNICEF office in Indonesia, also expressed his appreciation towards the Group for its donation in support of UNICEF Indonesia programmes in Aceh.

“UNICEF is rushing relief assistance to the hardest area hit by massive ocean flooding following Sunday’s earthquake, working to meet the urgent needs of hundreds of thousands of people who survived the tsunamis who now need shelter, water, medical supplies and other urgent assistance.” said Bridle. The Baiduri Bank Group expresses its sympathies to the victims and their families of this catastrophic disaster. It also hopes that more local organisations will be encouraged to contribute to the humanitarian efforts of relief agencies worldwide.
