RECORD BREAKING BAIDURI MASTERS ENDS WITH MANY WINNERS

Bandar Seri Begawan, 11 May 2008.  Golfing enthusiast, Elyas Abdullah Tseu, who landed a hole-in-one last Sunday at the Baiduri Masters charity golf event, received the key to his brand new BMW730Li at a prize presentation ceremony held this afternoon.  The key was handed over to Elyas by Dato Paduka Awang Chua Pheng Siong, General Manager of Business Development at QAF Brunei Sdn Bhd, which sponsored the car.  It was the first time in the tournament’s thirteen year history that a hole-in-one prize has been won.

The ceremony was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the RBA Sports Complex, Berakas.   More than 300 guests attended.  Among the guests were cabinet ministers, members of foreign diplomatic missions, sponsors, golfers and senior officials of Baiduri Bank Group.

In his welcome address, Mr Pierre Imhof, General Manager of Baiduri Bank said, “Baiduri Bank is well known as an award-winning local bank offering the widest range of banking products and services.  We are thankful for the continuous support of our customers which has contributed to our business success.  Being a leader in the local banking industry is not all we strive for.  We also believe that it is also our duty as good corporate citizens to contribute to social improvement.  The Baiduri Masters is evidence of our uninterrupted commitment to social contributions.”

“This event has turned out to be extremely significant this year. We finally have a winner for the hole-in-one.  I am extremely pleased and I congratulate Elyas Abdullah for his superb golfing skills and may I add, his good luck, too.”

From the tournament proceeds, several charity and welfare organizations received donations during the ceremony.

A cheque for B$18,277.78 was presented to the Special Education Section of the Ministry of Education to cover the cost of 10 units of specially designed personal computers for visually impaired students.  Cikgu Hj Abdul Aji Bin Hj Ishak, Acting Director of School cum Acting Head of Special Education Unit received the cheque on behalf of the Unit.

Malai Haji Abdullah Bin Malai Haji Othman received a cheque for B$8,000 on behalf of SMARTER Brunei.  This will be utilized to partially fund of the purchase of a Hi-Ace Toyota Van for the Centre.

YM Dato Paduka Hj Alimin Bin Hj Abdul Wahab received a cheque for B$10,000 on behalf of Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah.  This is to cover the cost of two teachers at the centre for 2008.

YB Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Bin Hj Osman, Minister of Health, Brunei Darussalam, received a mock key on behalf of the Child Development Centre, RIPAS Hospital signifying the handing over of several recent projects at the centre financed by Baiduri Bank.  These included the set up of the sensory integration and audio visual rooms, books for feeding clinic, wheelchairs, commodes, chest walkers and stroller buggies, totalling B$27,000.

In addition, a special wheelchair was presented to Awang Yahya Bin Kassim, a house-bound 18-year old who was diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy.

All donations were presented by Mr Pierre Imhof, General Manager of Baiduri Bank.

Baiduri Masters is the most prestigious of events in the Brunei golfing calendar each year. Held for the thirteenth time this year and re-branded “The Baiduri Masters – Your Charity Golf Event”, the event witnessed several “firsts”.  This is the first time the event has been held over two weekends.  This is the first time that a player has managed to hit a hole-in-one.  And this is the first time that any golf event in Brunei has attracted 724 players, the highest ever in history.

The five-day event took place at the RBA Golf Club, Berakas from 4th to 5th May, and from 9th to 11th May 2008.  Organized annually by Baiduri Bank Group to raise funds for charity, it is supported by QAF Eurokars Sdn Bhd, QAF Auto Sdn Bhd, QAF Brunei, Ben Foods (B) Sdn Bhd, RBA Golf Club Sdn Bhd and media supporter Brunei Press Sdn Bhd.

The Baiduri Masters 2008 featured an attractive array of hole-in-one prizes including: Porsche Cayman S, BMW X3 2.5Si, BMW 523iA and BMW 320 Executive.  Only the BMW730Li was won.

Golfers also won novelty prizes for nearest to pin at all Par 3 over the five day event as well as attractive charity draw prizes which included air tickets, Plasma and LCD television sets.
