Bandar Seri Begawan, 26 April 2011 – Renowned for its strength, commitment and innovation in the Brunei market, Baiduri Bank has once again achieved two “first” to its name.

Today marks the bank’s introduction of Baiduri UnionPay Debit Card, the first PIN-based international debit card in Brunei Darussalam. This is also the first payment card launched under the UnionPay brand in Brunei Darussalam.

Unlike conventional signature-based payment cards, transactions made with the Baiduri UnionPay Debit Card requires a personalized identification number or PIN to be keyed in for any transactions to be approved thus giving cardholders a high level of protection from fraud or misuse of the card.

Launched at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom located in the Empire Hotel and Country Club, the afternoon event was officially launched by Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. Also in attendance was His Excellency, Mr. Min Yongnian, Ambassador of The People’s Republic of China to Brunei, senior government officials, prominent business figures, card merchants and senior executives of Baiduri Bank Group and China UnionPay.

The launch of the Baiduri UnionPay Debit Card comes at an opportune time, where trade with China has grown to the extent that China is now one of Brunei’s largest trading partners with greater prospects for more trade and economic development. There are also increased visitors from Brunei to China and more Chinese tourists visiting Brunei. More travels are expected between the two countries following Royal Brunei Airlines’ resumption of its direct flight to Shanghai last year.

In his welcome speech, Mr. Pierre Imhof, General Manager of Baiduri Bank said, “With 2011 as the Year of Friendship between Brunei and China as declared by the two governments earlier this year, we believe the Baiduri UnionPay Debit Card will further enhance payment convenience to business and leisure travellers and provide a safer alternative through the use of PIN-based security.”

Mr. Cai Jianbo, First Executive Vice President of China UnionPay, in his speech said, “As part of our commitment in extending unsurpassed quality bankcard services, the Baiduri UnionPay collaboration has accomplished another milestone today by merging security and convenience for business and leisure travellers to perform secured cashless transactions anywhere in the world.”

Baiduri UnionPay Debit Cards are vastly accepted throughout China and globally recognized in over 104 countries. Baiduri UnionPay Debit cardholders will have access to over 2,000 merchants locations, 37 Baiduri ATMs and 39 other ATMs in Brunei with UnionPay logo.

Baiduri Bank was the first bank to launch UnionPay card acceptance services last year on 2 March 2010, allowing Baiduri merchants to accept foreign issued UnionPay cards, tapping on the increasing number of business travellers and visitors from China and around the world to Brunei.

In conjunction with its launch of the first pin-based international debit card in Brunei, Baiduri Bank is offering a promotion from May to July 2011, whereby cardholders can enjoy a two-year annual fee waiver as well as a chance to win a travel package for two to Universal Studio, Singapore.
