25th November 2011

Bandar Seri Begawan, 25th November 2011 – Following the tradition from past few years, Baiduri has again taken the task of being the main sponsor for the Universal Children’s Day Celebration, hosted by Community Development Department in the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports.

The Universal Children’s Day is celebrated each year on the 20th November. This year’s celebration in Brunei revolves around the theme "Appreciate Our Voices” which stresses the importance of a child's right to express their views and to be heard.

Appropriate to this theme, the Community Development Department, with support from Baiduri Bank Group, Brunei Press Sdn Bhd and Kwang Wei Advertising & Design, hosted a two-day forum on November 23rd and 24th at the Dewan Muhibbah, Jalan Airport Lama, in the Brunei-Muara District Office.

Attended by 300 students from 15 secondary schools including five private schools in the Brunei-Muara District, the forum was facilitated by officers from the Department of Community Development, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Department of Brunei Museums, Department of Schools, Youth Development Centre, Baiduri Bank, Mashhor General Contractors Sdn Bhd and HRD Services. The forum saw children puting forward their views on topics such as financial planning, entrepreneurship, family values, education, religion and health, environment, culture, and more.

Ms Irene Thow, Bancassurance Manager in the Baiduri Wealth Management Centre came to assume the role of facilitator in the forum, on the subject of Financial Planning. She mentioned, "The group was very eloquent and very keen to participate in the discussions. I was quite impressed with their level of maturity and ability to create strong arguments to accompany their resolutions."

The forum marks the first time that the Government of His Majesty the Sultan will be open to input, views and opinions from children under the age of 15, highlighting the simple and unique perspective that children possess when compared with their adult counterparts.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah officiated the launching ceremony of the Universal Children's Day Celebrations.

Also present at the event was Ms Dorothy Newn, Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing in Baiduri Bank.
