Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th April 2012.  As part of its corporate social responsibility activities, Baiduri Bank recently sponsored the “IPoster Contest” organized by the BEDB in celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day, which falls today.

The prize presentation ceremony to award the winners of the ‘IPoster Contest’ was held at the Knowledge Hub in AnggerekDesa this afternoon.  On hand to give away the prizes was Yvonne Chan, Senior Manager, Corporate Banking Division of Baiduri Bank together with Dr Abd Manaf Metussin, Deputy CEO of BEDB. 

In her congratulatory speech, Yvonne Chansaid, “It is important that the youth of today, the future generation of our workforce are fully aware of the legal issues associated with intellectual property, as they will come into contact with a lot of intellectual property in the future.  Besides being a strong believer in intellectual property rights, Baiduri Bank has always been supportive of initiatives that promote innovation and creativity among the youth.  We are delighted to be a part of this project. ”

Prior to that, Dayang Shahrinah Yusof Khan, Deputy Registrar and Head of Patent Registry Office, BEDB remarked, “BEDB is committed to promoting a culture in which young people can realize their potential by providing a positive outlet for youths to express themselves and unleash their creativity.  The IPoster contest was initiated in the hope that youths in the country would be encouraged to recognize the creator and artist within themselves as well as to raise awareness of the importance in daily life of patents, trademarks and designs.

Launched on the 1st of March, the Contest was organized to increase awareness amongst youths on the link between creativity, innovation and intellectual property through creative design. 45 youths registered for the Contest who designed posters based on three aspects of intellectual property: patents, trademarks or industrial designs. A total of 17 posters were received.

Winnie Sia Wie Nee, a student from University Brunei Darussalam was awarded the gold entry and was presented with BND500 worth of cash for her creative design. The poster has also been published on the Patent Registry Office’s website as well as on the World Intellectual Property Organization website.

The Silver Prize of BND300 was awarded to Mohammad KhairolMateen Hj Hashim, a student from PTE Katok, whilst graphic designer Josephin On won the Bronze Prize of BND200.  Osvehanis Diyana Osman, a student from the Jerudong International School was awarded BND100 for her creative efforts.

Also present at the ceremony were Dorothy Newn, Manager Corporate Communications & Marketing and Rosmawati PDIS Hj Johari, Account Relationship Manager, Corporate Banking of Baiduri Bank.

The World IP Day is celebrated every year on April 26 by Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This year, WIPO joins governments, organizations, schools and enterprises around the world in celebrating the role of design in the market-place, in society and in shaping the innovations of the future, honoring Visionary Innovators – people whose innovations transform lives and change the way society operates.  WIPO receives posters every year from its member states, and this year marks the first time Bruneian youths have entered their creative designs.

To continue in the celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day, the Patent Registry Office of the BEDB is holding an Exhibition of the posters at the Knowledge Hub for the public to view from the 26th of April to the 26th of May 2012. 

This Contest is the second in a series of activities under BEDB’s ‘Bright’ or Brunei’s Innovative Generation initiative that is aimed to stir creativity and innovation amongst local youths and talents. All prizes for this Contest were sponsored by the BEDB and Baiduri Bank.
