18th November 2012

Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th November 2012 - Universiti Brunei Darussalam emerged as the champions of the Intervarsity Road Safety Debate 2012 yesterday in the dramatic final debate against Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA). The motion for the debate was: “this house believes that increasing awareness of the need for greater road safety is more effective than tougher enforcement of laws in tackling road accidents”.

Inevitably in a competition such as this a single team emerges victorious. However, all the participants in the campaign displayed a vast knowledge on the subject evidencing their keen interest and research on the subject.

With arguments both for and against the subject, the audience were treated to a balanced view on awareness and enforcement of Road Safety. The public perception was indeed directed in both directions with the debaters, enthusiastically presenting their cases substantiating the effectiveness of both enforcement and awareness. Indeed this debate will change the perception of those who take Road safety lightly.

The guest of honour is Ak Abdullah Bin Pg Hj Tengah, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Higher Education, from the Ministry of Education. The event was held at the Senate Room in Universiti Brunei Darussalam, who co-organised the event with Baiduri Finance.

Kamarudzaman Bin Abdul Jalil, from the UBD team also won the title of the Best Speaker especially in his animated debate counter attacking the motion.
