Bandar Seri Begawan, 18 October 2012 - In a concerted effort to help address the worrying pattern of road accidents in the country, another collaboration between the public and private sectors in the form of a road safety awareness campaign was launched this morning. The campaign is being held in conjunction with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims which falls on November 18th this year. The event took place at the Dewan Amar Pahlawan of the Ministry of Communications.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, the Minister of Communications was the guest of honour at the event.

The event began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by a welcome speech by Mr Pierre Imhof, Director of Baiduri Finance. This was followed by the launching of the campaign by Yang Berhormat Pehin with a ‘menepung tawar’ (sprinkling of scented water) on five purple buses that had been adorned with campaign decals.

He was followed by YM Awang Abdul Mutalib Bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yussof, Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, Mr Pierre Imhof, Baiduri Finance Director, YM Awang Haji Idris Bin Haji Md Ali, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, YM Senior Superintendent Azahari Bin Hj Awang Besar, Acting Director of Road Traffic Control and Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police and YM Awang Haji Haliluddin Dato Paduka Haji Talib, the General Manager of Baiduri Finance. The blessing of the buses took place at the main entrance of the Ministry of Communications building.

The decals serve as an impulse to the public and motorists to inspire to drive safely on the road and be vigilant to other road users at all times.

Billboards will also be put up and displayed at Ministry of Communications’ building, the departments’ building under the Ministry, all Baiduri branches and premises of other co-campaigners with an inspirational message “See You later. Come back safely”.

Following the ‘menepung tawar’ ceremony, YB Pehin led other guests on an online pledge on road safety via the URL: www.bruneiredcrescent.com/roadsafetypledge belonging to the Red Crescent Society of Brunei Darussalam held at the Dewan Amar Pahlawan. In making the pledge, each individual promises to adopt road safety as his or her responsibility. The public can log on to this website to make their pledges before 31st December 2012.

The Brunei National Road Safety Council (BNRSC) is the lead facilitator in the Road Safety Awareness Campaign while Baiduri Finance is the lead campaigner. Co-campaigners comprise the Brunei Automobile Traders Association (PPAB), the General Insurance Association of Brunei (GIAB), Takaful Brunei Am Sdn Bhd, Insurans Islam TAIB Sdn Bhd, the Red Crescent Society of Brunei and the Co-Curriculum Department of the Ministry of Education. The campaign comprises a series of activities spanning over one month targeted at the various age groups. Besides messages on buses, in cinemas, over radio and TV, in the papers, in websites and over social media; there will also be a debating contest among tertiary education institutions organized by the Ministry of Education.

Each campaigner shall also hold activities at their own premises to reinforce the message. Members of the Brunei Automobile Transport Association (PPAB) will be offering free vehicle safety checks, while the General Insurance Association of Brunei (GIAB) will be holding a seminar on the subject of insurance and road safety this afternoon as a joint observation of Insurance Day and the Road Safety Campaign while the Red Crescent Society will be distributing pledge cards from school to school with the aim to cover 3,000 students by the end of the campaign. The Campaign will culminate in a grand finale “Remembrance Day Walkabout & MindQuiz on Road Safety” at the Jerudong Park Playground on Sunday, 18th November 2012.

Haji Haliluddin Dato Paduka Haji Talib, Baiduri Finance’s General Manager and Chairman of the organizing committee, thanked the National Road Safety Council and the campaign partners for their support.
