Bandar Seri Begawan, 8th February 2013.  PENGIRAN Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School emerged as the champion of the BigStart Competition for Secondary Schools and Colleges 2012 and received the grand prize of B$1200 after defeating four other finalists during the competition’s finals yesterday.

Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) College was the 1st runner-up while Saiyyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School took the 2nd runner-up spot.

The Tutong Sixth Form Centre and Pengiran Isteri Hajah Mariam Secondary School finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The BigStart Competition for Secondary Schools and Colleges 2012 was organised by Baiduri Bank and was managed by the Co-Curriculum Education Department, Ministry of Education through the Skills and Entrepreneurship Division.

The guest of honour who presented the prizes at the finals yesterday was the Director-General of Education at the Ministry of Education, Pg Hjh Sarah binti Pg Hj Kamaludin.

Pg Hjh Sarah was impressed by the young participants’ flair for taking risks, experiencing and creating realistic business plans and implementing them with long-term plan in mind.

"This is why a competition such as this is essential, anything we can do to encourage young people to be good business planners".

Acting Assistant Director of the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education as the chairperson, Awg Roslin bin Suhailee explained that the innovative BigStart Competition has “provided opportunities for students to interact and socialise. This was crucial in order to build their character, personality and positive friendship towards becoming more independent and responsible, traits needed to win the competition.”

"The competition can make a great impact on the future of the young participants as entrepreneurs, and help to shape the future of entrepreneurship sector in Brunei Darussalam," Awg Roslin positively added.

The BigStart Entrepreneurship Competition is done in an effort to expose entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen among secondary and college students in Brunei. Only 5 out of 12 teams were selected to compete in the finals.
