BAIDURI BANK GROUP GIVES BACK TO SOCIETY WITH THE BAIDURI MASTERS
4th June 2014

Being a part of a community that emphasises the importance of shouldering social responsibilities to help the less fortunate, the Baiduri Bank Group is once again in the midst of hosting among the country’s most prestigious and anticipated charity events that has become a long-standing fixture in Brunei’s Corporate Social Responsibility calendar.

The event, which began last Saturday, May 30 was held over the weekend and will continue this weekend on June 6 to June 8, 2014 at the RBA Golf Club in Berakas. The Baiduri Masters charity golf tournament hopes to attract golfers locally and from abroad to vie for the country’s top golfing honours.

With 18 years of experience in the bringing together of this highly recognised event coupled with a strengthening track record for being a proactive member of society, the Baiduri Masters has raised over B$1 million since it was established almost 20 years ago.

The event will focus on, among others, supporting five of Brunei’s government and non-government charity organisations whose contributions to the country’s development has proven unwavering, even in the face of adversity. This year’s event is aimed at providing financial assistance to SMARTER Brunei, Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al Hajjah Maryam, Yayasan Kanser Kanak-Kanak (YASKA), the Child Development Centre (CDC) and Learning Ladders Society, the Baiduri Masters will offer the participants the opportunity to make a difference to some of the lives of those in need. Last year, Baiduri Bank was able to donate B$90,000 to these five charities.

As some of these organisations rely solely on the kind hearts and generosity of the Bruneian people and community, the donations they have received thus far have provided for their monthly operating expenses which includes the salaries of staff and therapists, purchase or replacement of equipment, the expansion of facilities as well as services which allows for a more conducive and positive environment necessary for those in need to integrate into society.

In past events, proceeds from the tournaments have gone to the provision of educational toys and books as well as specialised equipment. The toys at the aptly-named Toy Library at YASKA have been funded primarily from the proceeds of the tournament. These toys, according to a spokesperson at YASKA, have provided a much needed escape to many of their patients. The Baiduri Masters proceeds have also gone to the purchase of specialised equipment such as a therapeutic ultrasound machine at Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al Hajjah Maryam, much needed wheelchairs at the Child Development Centre as well as laptops and specially designed PCs for the less fortunate and disabled.

The support from the bank and the golfers have also allowed for the construction of new classrooms and new buildings such as the Sensory Integration and Audio Visual Room at the Child Development Centre. The donations also go towards funding for medical expenses for children who require treatment overseas and other initiatives such as YASKA’s cancer survivor programme. This year, YASKA was able to send one of their patients to attend the seventh International Conference of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations (ICCCPO) Asia Meeting where she was able to share her journey and experiences and, at the same time, learn of other less fortunate people’s journeys with cancer. The proceeds are also used to help grant the last wishes of very sick patients.

Mr Pierre Imhof, CEO of Baiduri Bank has stated that the main aim of the Masters is to raise funds for the less fortunate and to promote activities that would help them gain acceptance into the wider society. He said, “With the added advantage of a caring community that Brunei Darussalam is known for, the Baiduri Bank Group is not alone in its endeavour towards cultivating a more socially and morally conscious environment, as evident by the ever increasing number of participants in past tournaments.”

Organized by the Baiduri Bank Group, this year’s Baiduri Masters is supported by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, with the QAF Motor Group, Brunei Press, RBA Golf Club and MINT Sdn Bhd as event partners.  QAF Motor Group is providing the three luxury cars as hole-in-one prizes, while Brunei Press is the exclusive print media for the event.  With the coming together of sport and charity in a stimulating way, this year’s Baiduri Masters will be set against a standard that aims to not just impress but to also play a large part in securing the future of some of the less fortunate members of our society.
