A WALK DOWN BAIDURI MASTERS MEMORY LANE – THE MILESTONES
31st May 2014

Bandar Seri Begawan, 31 May 2014 –For almost 2 decades, the Baiduri Masters charity golf tournament has grown; today it is acknowledged as the biggest and most prestigious annual golfing event in Brunei Darussalam. The tournament was formed in 1995 as the Baiduri Bank Charity Golf tournament and adopted its current name in 2008.

Along with the rebranding of the golf tournament to become the Baiduri Masters, that same year also recorded many new ‘firsts’. It saw the introduction of the Challenge Trophy which is to be kept by the winner of 3 consecutive tournaments. To date, there has only ever been one real contender to keep the Challenge Trophy, the winner of the last two Baiduri Masters, Khairul Kamis.

2008 also marked the first time the golf tournament was held over 2 weekends to allow for a higher participation rate. In 2006, there were more than 400 participants and over the years, the number of participants has steadily risen; last year saw 1,087 participants – the highest number of participants to date. Also in 2008, Elyas Abdullah Tseu was the first ever participant to land a hole-in-one, netting a BMW 730Li. In the Baiduri Masters 18-year history, Elyas Abdullah was and is the only golfer to have walked away from the tournament with a hole-in-one prize.

The year 2009 contained another milestone, the introduction of the Baiduri Masters Green Jacket. That year, the first winner to ever don the coveted Green Jacket was Wan Man Wan Hil. The following year then marked another 2 significant firsts in Baiduri Masters history – it was the first time the tournament was held in 2 different golf courses at 2 different districts; the Panaga Golf Club in Kuala Belait and the RBA Golf Club and it was also the first time the number of participants had surpassed the 1,000 mark with a total of 1,067 participants.

Another Baiduri Masters achievement took place in 2012 where the Baiduri Masters was featured in PARGOLF magazine, a regional golfing magazine, for the first time.

As this year's Baiduri Masters approaches, two questions must be running through the minds of the Brunei golfing community. Will Khairul Kamis defend his position as the reigning champion for the third time and keep the Challenge Trophy? And, will we see another lucky golfer land a hole-in-one and walk away with one of the five fabulous prizes? The prizes, worth a total of B$450,000 comprise a Porsche Panamera, a BMW ActiveHybrid 5, a Mini Cooper and two B$20,000 cash prizes.

The Baiduri Masters is an annual charity golf tournament organised by the Baiduri Bank Group and is supported by the QAF Group of Companies as well as Brunei Press as the exclusive print media partner. Since its inception in 1995, the competition has been raising funds for local charities that support and help people with special needs and promote activities that help people with special needs to integrate into society.

This year’s event will be held over two weekends at the RBA Golf Club, from 30 May to 1 June and from 6 June to 8 June but it has already achieved 2 milestones. For the first time in its 19 year history, the Baiduri Masters has the official support of the government via the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and keeping inline with their objective of promoting golf amongst the youth, Baiduri Bank and Numero Uno will organize a Starting New At Golf (SNAG) golf clinic on 31 May open to children aged 5 to 12.

The Baiduri Masters is divided into 3 divisions: Men's, Ladies and Juniors. The Men's division will be further divided into Men's Open and Senior Golfers categories while the Juniors division is open to golfers aged between 13 and 18 years. Players who are interested to participate can still register at RBA Golf Club. For more details, the public can log into www.baiduri.com or call 2449666 during office hours.
