BAIDURI BANK SUPPORTS FINANCIAL LITERACY AT GLOBAL MONEY WEEK 2015

Bandar Seri Begawan, 18 March 2015. To encourage understanding on financial planning among students in Brunei, Baiduri Bank became the main sponsor of the Global Money Week 2015.

The event finale, held at the Agro Park, Rimba yesterday, saw more than 100 students from various secondary schools throughout Brunei vying for top honours in the various categories. The categories included a banner-making contest and the Financial ExploRace. The banner-making contest was based on this year’s theme for Global Money Week "Save Today, Safe Tomorrow".

Perdana Wazir Secondary School was selected as the overall champion. The team received B$1,500.00 worth of Baiduri Student Account 4U Value Pack. Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and SOAS College came in second and third and won themselves B$1000 and B$500 worth of Baiduri Student Savings Account 4U Value Pack respectively.

Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School was adjudged the champion for the banner making competition while Perdana Wazir Secondary School won in the Financial ExploRace category.

Global Money Week is an annual global celebration that is organized internationally and coordinated by a non-profit making organisation, Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI), Netherlands. In 2014, Global Money Week was observed in 118 countries where over 1 million children participated in the week-long activities.

As a prelude to yesterday’s finale, various fun activities were conducted from 9th – 17th March 2015 in conjunction with the Global Money Week 2015, jointly organized by Ministry of Education through Entrepreneurship & Business Unit and Special Project Unit, Curriculum Development Department and The Employees Trust Fund (TAP), the Ministry of Finance.

On the first day of the Global Money Week 2015, the students visited the Currency Gallery of the Ministry of Finance where they were briefed on how money and coins are made. This was then followed by a visit to the Employees Trust Fund of the Ministry of Finance.

Later in the week, the students had an informative and interactive session with certified financial planners from Baiduri Bank, as well as representatives from other participating banks and the Centre for Islamic Banking Finance and Management (CIBFM) of the Ministry of Finance. The discussions centred on how money works, savings and financial planning.

The Guest of Honour at yesterday’s event was Haji Abd. Rahman bin Haji Nawi, Director of Curriculum Develipment Department, Ministry of Education. Also present was Dorothy Newn, Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing of Baiduri Bank.
