BAIDURI BANK HOSTS "AMERICA FIRST IS NOT ASIA LAST" SEMINAR

Bandar Seri Begawan, 25April 2017. In keeping customers well informed on the latest trends in financial markets, Baiduri Bank, in collaboration with DBS Bank, organized an economic seminar titled, "America First is not Asia Last". The event was held at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom, The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

Pg Azaleen Pg Dato Hj Mustapha, Head of Retail Banking and Branch Network, Baiduri Bank gave the welcoming remarks. In his speech, he highlighted 2016 as a year of global political earthquakes. He mentioned, "All these factors will, in some way or another, affect the global economy for the year 2017.The topic of "America First" remains popular, relevant and punctuated with heightened uncertainties. We hope by bringing in a noted expert, our customers will gain more insight on this interesting topic."

The seminar was presented by Mr Philip Wee, Executive Director, Group Research, DBS Bank based in Singapore. Wee’s key research interests are global imbalances and the integrity of the global financial system, the internationalization of the Chinese Yuan and the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. In 2016, Wee was best remembered as the only economist who correctly predicted Singapore ending its appreciating SGD policy in April. His Singapore Dollar nominal effective exchange rate (SGD NEER) model is closely followed by institutional clients.

In his seminar, Mr Philip Wee attempted to balance the hopes and fears surrounding US President Donald Trump and his "America First" policies, and what they mean for Asia. He also covered the threat posed to the Euro from Brexit and the elections in Europe.
