Baiduri Bank Cautions Customers About Phishing Attempts

Bandar Seri Begawan, 04 April 2019 - In efforts to protect customers and the public from phishing attacks, Baiduri Bank reminds customers to be vigilant of various scams through their mobile phones, as the Bank has received reports of suspicious SMS received by some customers.

Phishing is a cybercrime which aims to trick people to disclose personal information such as identity, passwords or bank account numbers through various mediums, and then exploiting said information normally resulting in financial loss.

In an attempt to get the SMS recipient to call an overseas number, the message claims that there is a gift or a cheque for the customer and the customer is to call an overseas number stated in the message. The messages are as follows:

SMS #1 Urgent:Congratulations!!The representative of the Baiduri Bank informs you that your cheque is ready.call for free on this number 006785514067
SMS #2 Baiduri Bank !! The last chances to receive your gift call for free this number 006785514067

To prevent customers and the general public from falling victim to such scams, Baiduri Bank would like to offer some tips on actions that should be taken in the event of a phishing scam:

  1. Ignore the call, email or SMS and contact Baiduri Bank. If customers are unsure about a call, email or SMS supposedly sent from Baiduri Bank, please contact the Baiduri Bank 24-hour Customer Helpline at 2449666 for clarification.
  2. Do not transfer any money to the caller or sender via bank transfers, remittance agencies or any other means.
  3. Do not provide personal information such as name, I/C or passport numbers, bank account details or card details.
  4. Do contact your bank immediately if you have responded to what you believe may be a scam. Provide as much detail as possible of the transaction that took place.
  5. Do review your account transactions regularly and contact your bank if you come across any unauthorised transactions.
