Baiduri Capital Holds Sharing Session For Investment Challenge 2019 Participants
20 December 2019

Bandar Seri Begawan, 20 December 2019 With the Baiduri Capital Investment Challenge (BCIC) 2019 nearing its halfway point, Baiduri Capital recently held a sharing session for the participants to learn about their progress in the competition. The event was held at The Core, University Brunei Darussalam.

Throughout the challenge, participants are given direct access to licensed dealers who act as their mentors. These mentors offer valuable insights and advice into the world of trading and investing. For several participants, the BCIC 2019 is their first foray into financial investments and capital markets.

Muhamas Shafie’e bin Abdullah Sofian, the team leader from Bais’t had long been interested in securities trading. He shared that through the mentorship programme, his team received lots of insight on what to look for when trading and investing. He said: “Previously I only had knowledge of investing from my own research but with hands on guidance like this, it has helped my team become more confident and decisive in trading in the stock market.”

Meanwhile, Nur Haziqah Jahirah binti Hj Osman, the team leader from Harvest Capital shared that the BCIC 2019 has been a great introduction to trading and investing; and while the team is only making a small profit so far, it doesn’t discourage them. She said: “For the team, the hardest part is disciplining ourselves to keep up with the latest stock news and to make quick decisions. We learnt through experience that we have to make quick decisions when the time is right to invest and to sell when stocks are at a high point.”

She said that the mentoring sessions have helped her and her teammates overcome their initial hesitation on dipping their hands into investments, adding "I think that with proper guidance, most young people will be willing to venture into investing.”

The BCIC 2019 began in October and is set to end in April next year. This year’s challenge attracted six teams made up of undergraduate students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Politeknik Brunei (PB). Each team comprise four members and are given BND5,000 as initial capital to invest into any of the securities listed on the Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, US stock exchanges and China A-shares. Upon the completion of the challenge, any profits earned by the teams will be retained by them.

Mr Peng Eng Soon, General Manager of Baiduri Capital said: “We hope that this investment challenge will generate interest amongst the younger generation so they will not only appreciate the workings of the capital markets, but also prepare them to deal with investment opportunities in the future.”

This BCIC is an annual initiative undertaken by Baiduri Capital to increase the overall awareness of securities trading and supports AMBD’s goal of increasing investment literacy among the general public.
