A Conversation with Baiduri Masters Defending Champion: Johari Hj Ahmad
21 March 2019

Bandar Seri Begawan, 21 March 2019 - The year was 1999 when Johari Hj Ahmad first stepped into the sport of golf. The venue, as with most golfers of his generation, was Pantai Mentiri Golf Club (PMGC). Two decades have passed since he first began his journey on the green, and he is now the defending champion of the Baiduri Masters having won the tournament for the very first time last year.

A regular at the Pantai Mentiri Golf Club, at one point in his golfing career, he could be seen either on the course or the driving range everyday, practising the various facets of the game, and often with his mentor. "I was so engrossed by the sport that it became part of my daily routine," he said.

"Having no prior experience in the sport, I decided to try my hand at golf in response to a close friends suggestion and have never looked back ever since," when speaking on why he first got into the sport. He further elaborated that a huge influence which drove him deeper into golf is Hj Abdul Majid Ahmad, a seasoned local golfer. "This man [Hj Majid Ahmad], my mentor, taught me the basic fundamentals to the more advanced skills and techniques of the game. Most importantly, he taught me the most crucial aspect of golf – the mental game."

"When I found out that Pantai Mentiri would be the venue for the upcoming Baiduri Masters, I was both anxious and excited as I am very familiar with the course but I will also be the first to admit that it is a very challenging and long course." He also stated that because of the length of the course, it is both a test of endurance and patience, further highlighting the need for a strong mental game.

In preparing for the upcoming tournament, Johari said that he is a firm believer in routine. "For the past few years, come rain or shine, I have maintained a practice schedule [for golf] of at least three times a week focusing on all aspects of my game. And I compete in as many tournaments as I can because though golf can be enjoyed alone, being in a tournament setting often provides that little push needed to sharpen a person’s game."

In 2018, Johari snagged five tournament wins, including the Baiduri Masters.

Johari, who is no stranger to the local golfing scene, is also not one to shy from providing and sharing his knowledge with junior golfers. As a sign of respect to his mentor for the guidance and knowledge on the sport, Johari now mentors the son of Hj Abdul Majid Ahmad, Md Aritz Maldini bin Hj Abdul Majid Ahmad.

The Baiduri Masters charity golf tournament is organised by Baiduri Bank Group with the support of strategic partners QAF Auto Sdn Bhd, QAF Eurokars Sdn Bhd, QAF Brunei and Brunei Press Sdn Bhd.

The tournament will be held over two weekends on 12 to 14 April 2019 and 19 to 21 April 2019. The event will end with a Prize Presentation Dinner at the Hua Ho Manggis Ballroom on Sunday, 21 April 2019 at 7:00pm.
