Present during the launch event as guest of honour officiating the event was Dr. Nor Imtihan Binti Haji Abdul Razak, Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment), Ministry of Development.
This year, the Baiduri Lokal Market went beyond just being a platform for local MSMEs. It is spearheading a movement towards sustainable and low-impact lifestyles. Use of single-use plastics is restricted at the event, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own utensils.
The event also places a spotlight on the mounting issue of electronic waste (e-waste). In partnership with JASTRE, the market hosts educational booths to discuss e-waste production, recycling, and proper disposal methods.
"As technology evolves at an unprecedented rate, so does the number of discarded electronic devices. This collaboration aims to drive awareness and inspire action among individuals and businesses, aligning with Brunei’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Wawasan 2035 vision," said Ti Eng Hui, CEO of Baiduri Bank, during the official launch.
Members of the public are encouraged to recycle their e-waste by dropping off their e-wastes at the Sungai Akar Transfer Station which opens daily from 8.00am until 4.00pm. Alternatively, the public may engage directly with recycling companies registered under the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation. The list of registered recycling companies can be found at JASTRe's official website,
www.env.gov.bn.Another innovative feature of this year's event is the community mural initiative. In collaboration with The Drawing House, a local art collective. Attendees are invited to pledge for responsible e-waste disposal, contributing to a mural that symbolises collective commitment to sustainability.
Ti Eng Hui emphasised, "We are not only supporting local businesses but also bringing to light pressing environmental issues. Our joint efforts with JASTRE and The Drawing House reflect our dedication and our role in instilling culture of responsibility to a sustainable future.”
