Baiduri Bank today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with UnionPay International and Royal Brunei Airlines to jointly enhance cross-border travel and payment experiences across Brunei, China and the wider region. This collaboration aims to deliver seamless travel convenience and exclusive rewards for travellers across Brunei, Malaysia and China.
The partnership marks a key milestone in supporting Brunei’s growing outbound and inbound tourism, while promoting the adoption of secure and convenient payment solutions for travellers. By combining Baiduri Bank’s extensive local acquiring network, Royal Brunei Airlines’ route connectivity, and UnionPay International’s global acceptance footprint, the collaboration will offer greater convenience and value to both local and international travellers.
Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf Bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism. Signing on behalf of Baiduri Bank was Ti Eng Hui, CEO of Baiduri Bank; on behalf of UnionPay International, Michael Shang, Deputy General Manager of South East Asia; and on behalf of Royal Brunei Airlines, Captain Sabirin Bin Haji Abd Hamid, Chief Executive Officer.
Under the MOU, the three parties will explore a range of initiatives designed to deliver value-added benefits to UnionPay cardholders. These include exclusive flight and travel promotions and joint marketing efforts that spotlight Brunei as an attractive destination for both Chinese and regional visitors.
As one of Brunei’s leading financial institutions, Baiduri Bank’s strong merchant acquiring network provides broad acceptance coverage across retail, dining and lifestyle merchants nationwide. This partnership will allow UnionPay cardholders to enjoy greater payment convenience during their visit to Brunei, enriching their overall travel experience.
Baiduri Bank encourages local businesses to join its merchant network and accept UnionPay cards, as the Bank is currently the only financial institution in Brunei authorised to acquire UnionPay transactions. This offers merchants a unique advantage in reaching the growing number of Chinese visitors and regional travellers, while supporting Brunei’s tourism ecosystem and local economic growth.
“This partnership brings together three organisations with a shared vision of strengthening regional connectivity and delivering greater value to travellers,” said Ti Eng Hui, Chief Executive Officer of Baiduri Bank. “As Brunei continues to welcome more visitors and expand its links with key markets such as China and Malaysia, we are proud to play a role in enhancing the overall travel experience through greater convenience, collaboration and innovation.”
“We are delighted to partner with Baiduri Bank and Royal Brunei Airlines to enhance the travel and payment experience for UnionPay cardholders across the region. This collaboration reflects our commitment to supporting Brunei’s growing tourism ecosystem and strengthening regional connectivity through secure, seamless, and rewarding payment solutions,” said Michael Shang, Deputy General Manager, South East Asia, UnionPay International.
“This partnership represents an important step forward in enhancing the travel and payment experience for customers across Brunei, China, and the wider region,” said Captain Sabirin Bin Haji Abd Hamid, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines. He added, “At Royal Brunei Airlines, our purpose has always been to connect Brunei to the world, and the world to Brunei. With direct routes to key Chinese cities, as well as to regional destinations in Borneo, we are proud to play a vital role in strengthening connectivity and supporting Brunei’s tourism growth,” shared Captain Sabirin Bin Haji Abd Hamid, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Brunei Airlines.
Royal Brunei Airlines currently operates direct routes connecting Bandar Seri Begawan with several major Chinese cities, including Hangzhou, Nanning, and Beijing, as well as regional destinations such as Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in East Malaysia. These routes serve as important gateways for leisure, business, and family travel across the region.
The MOU reflects the shared vision of the three organisations to promote cross-border tourism and strengthen Brunei’s position as a digitally connected travel hub in the region.
