As part of the ongoing UBD Investment Challenge 2025, Baiduri Capital, in collaboration with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), hosted an interactive mid challenge “check in” session aimed at strengthening participants’ financial knowledge and analytical capabilities. The session was held at the UBD School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE) Conference Room, Universiti Brunei Darussalam last week.
The two-hour session featured insights from Tan Pheng Leong, a veteran financial executive with decades of experience in financial strategy, reporting, and governance, who shared practical perspectives on the topic “Understanding Financial Statements and Thematic Investment Strategy.”
Participants gained insights on key financial statement components—ranging from earnings and cash flow analysis to key financial ratios—and how these indicators support sound investment decision making. Representatives from the Brunei Darussalam Capital Market Association (BCMA) were also present to provide additional support and advice as teams progress through the competition, which runs until February 2026.
Beyond fundamentals, the session also explored macro level themes shaping global markets today, including artificial intelligence & digitalisation, energy transition and sustainability, interest rate environment as well as long term infrastructure development. These themes were presented to help participants understand broader market drivers and develop more resilient, forward looking investment strategies throughout the challenge.
Speaking on the session, Brian Wong, General Manager of Baiduri Capital said, “This check in session is more than just a learning opportunity. It’s about bridging theory with real world practice. By engaging with industry professionals and exploring current market themes, participants gain the confidence and skills to make informed investment decisions. We believe these experiences will empower Brunei’s future financial leaders to thrive in an increasingly complex global economy.”
This mid challenge initiative forms an integral part of Baiduri Capital’s broader efforts to equip participants with the financial literacy, analytical skills and market awareness needed to craft compelling investment rationales for their final presentations. By combining academic theory with practical and industry backed insights, the programme reinforces the commitment shared by UBD and Baiduri Capital to nurture Brunei’s next generation of investors and support the nation’s long term financial literacy aspirations.
The UBD Investment Challenge is organised by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and supported by Baiduri Capital, Brunei Darussalam Capital Market Association (BCMA), and the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB).
