Baiduri Bank Group, in collaboration with The Beach Bunch, organised its first-ever beach clean-up event at Jerudong Beach on Sunday, 15 October 2023.
The apprentices of Baiduri Bank's Graduate Apprenticeship Programme (GAP) took center stage during this event. GAP is a comprehensive learning and development programme aimed at providing recent graduates with the necessary knowledge, skill and experience that will increase their employability in the local job market.
The beach clean-up was part of the Bank’s Employee Wellness Initiative (EWI) which serves as a testament to the Bank's dedication to the well-being of its employees, with the primary aim to implement awareness on the importance of recycling and beach cleanliness. The event brought together 50 Baiduri Bank Group staff.
Jerudong Beach, a beloved destination cherished by locals and tourists alike, has been facing a growing litter problem. The event turned out to be a resounding success, with the dedicated team of staff collecting 68 plastic bags filled with litter, amounting to a staggering 434.5 kilogram of waste. The litter consisted of scraps, plastic bottles, slippers, and various other forms of materials that can have a detrimental impact on marine life and the overall ecosystem.
The Beach Bunch, a local NGO and environmental group renowned for its passion for beach clean-ups and raising awareness about safeguarding Brunei's coastlines, played a pivotal role in ensuring the event's success.
Speaking on the event, Veronica Chong, Head of Group Human Resources and Administration said, “Our EWI acknowledges the importance of enhancing employee wellness by nurturing physical, mental and spiritual health of our employees. This event, beyond its ecological benefits, has also brought our employees together as a community to do our part for a cleaner environment.”
Meanwhile, Manuel Bulens, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Compliance and Corporate Governance, explained that Baiduri Bank Group’s involvement in such initiatives sends a powerful message to the community that sustainable practices are integral to the Bank's values. He added, “By actively participating in community events like this, I hope that we can inspire positive change and protect our environment for future generations.”
